Starting as a marketing agency running ads for brands like GAP and Time Magazine, our team noticed the growing importance of Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) online experiences as part of the customer journey early on.
Most brands didn’t have Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) operations, and simply replied on marketplaces or retail partners. Those who had invested in DTC, usually had complex custom tech stacks that were only interoperable with extensive integrations and APIs.
After investigating the emerging cloud-based DTC ecommerce space, still in its infancy at that time, we saw the incredible opportunity of Shopify due to its open app ecosystem. We began advocating for Shopify in Hong Kong long before it became the first-choice powerhouse it is today.
At the time, few brands in the region were prioritizing DTC, and market awareness of overseas ecommerce platforms like Shopify was practically nonexistent. Nobody wanted to take a risk on an unfamiliar, foreign platform. To combat this skepticism and lack of awareness, we took a grassroots approach, spearheading the early local Shopify Meetups to educate merchants and build a thriving ecommerce community from the ground up.
Beyond market awareness, Shopify was still young and had feature gaps for the local market - especially concerning regional shipping and logistics. Furthermore, Hong Kong's retail landscape was heavily peppered with deeply entrenched, legacy POS and ERP systems. To make Shopify a viable option, we had to figure out complex integrations to make the platform speak to these legacy stacks. We closed these foundational gaps by building custom localized solutions ourselves, such as our pioneering SF Express integrations, and actively bringing key global tech partners into the local ecosystem.
The ultimate proof was in the execution. We successfully onboarded the first enterprise clients, proving once and for all that Shopify was highly capable and enterprise-ready for Hong Kong.
With our background in customer marketing and experience, we quickly saw an opportunity in ecommerce DTC-centric customer loyalty solutions. We launched S Loyalty in 2011, one of the first customer loyalty solutions in the Shopify ecommerce space - growing to over 20,000 installs in 150+ countries! We also began consulting brands in Hong Kong and APAC on using Shopify to build their ecommerce storefront, and with the launch of Shopify Plus in 2019 - we onboarded the first enterprise brand onto Shopify.
